STUDENT WRITER LILY HARE RECOMMENDS GIRL IN PIECES BY KATHLEEN GLASGOW
“The world becomes an ocean, the ocean washes over me, the sound of water is deafening, the water drowns my heart, my panic becomes as large as planets. I need release, I need to hurt myself more than the world can hurt me, and then I can comfort myself.”
Girl in Pieces depicts a beautiful, heart-wrenching story of the life many people live. Kathleen Glasgow tackles sensitive content; be cautious if you have suicidal thoughts or struggle with self-harm. It can be triggering or upsetting; it includes heavy topics such as drug abuse, sexual assault, self-harm, and alcoholism.
Charlotte- Charlie Davis is a 17-year-old girl who has experienced much turmoil and more than anyone should, especially at that age. Charlie has selective mutism, a self-harm addiction, and a past with lots of abuse. She is admitted into a psychiatric hospital. After she gets discharged due to lack of medical insurance and no way to pay for treatment, she hops on a bus to Tucson, Arizona to try and start her new life.
Ups and downs are something everyone has to deal with, but Charlie proves that any challenge can be overcome. Girl in Pieces has your attention piqued for the whole ride. Kathleen Glasgow does an amazing job of making the reader feel like they know Charlie. I can assure you; you will be thinking about Charlie and her journey all day! This book is so thick with emotion—from beginning to end.
I believe the author is sending a message of survival: Charlie is a survivor. She survives homelessness, assault, drug use, mental illness and so much more. She is unbelievably strong and perseveres through everything. I strongly recommend reading this book—if you’re okay with this subject matter—I’ve definitely added this to my collection of favourite books. If you want a book that makes you feel—like, really feel, Girl in Pieces is definitely for you.
